Where can you give birth in Rotterdam?

In Rotterdam (and surrounding areas) there are several locations where you can give birth. We work together with the Franciscus Gasthuis and the Erasmus Medical Center. In reality, we sometimes also assist deliveries at the IJsselland Hospital and the Ikazia Hospital.

In pregnancy, you will give your preference of the location of the delivery. Depending on whether the hospital has room, you can go there. Sometimes it is necessary to move to the second choice.

Births can take place at the following locations:

  • Home
  • Sophia Birth Center
  • St. Francis Hospital
  • Erasmus Medical Center
  • Ikazia Hospital
  • IJsselland hospital

How do you choose the location that suits you? This sometimes depends on which hospital is closest, but it may also depend on your birth plan. Hospitals offer different facilities that could possibly suit you.

Here are a few examples:

Home

  • Your own home provides a sense of familiarity and relaxation
  • The midwife monitors the entire time that it is safe to give birth at home. Does any doubt arise? Then we leave for the hospital

Sophia Birth Center

  • For pain relief, nitrous oxide can be given here by your own midwife, the delivery does not have to be transferred to the gynecologist
  • Adjacent are the delivery rooms of Erasmus MC. Should a transfer be needed, the doctor is nearby
  • You do not have to go home immediately after delivery, but you can stay for 1 to 5 days before going home

St. Francis Hospital

  • Should a medical indication arise during delivery, the gynecologist will come to the room and you will not have to be moved
